Music, Festivals & the Catskills’ Creative Legacy
The Catskills hold the most famous address in American music — the 1969 Woodstock festival site at Bethel Woods in Sullivan County — and half a century of creative residency since. Levon Helm recorded in Woodstock, Maverick Concerts has run a chamber-music summer on the same wooded grounds since 1916, and venues from Colony and Bearsville Theater in Woodstock to the Forestburgh Playhouse in Sullivan County still pull national bills. This pillar covers the live music scene as it exists today: the summer-season concerts, the festival calendar, the legacy venues still worth the drive, and the smaller rooms where touring acts still stop through on the way between Boston and New York.
