Bethel Woods in Winter: Pumpkins, Then a Million Lights
The 1969 festival site spends half the year as a concert lawn and the other half as the largest seasonal installation in Sullivan County. What runs there from October through New Year, and how to do it without queueing for an hour.
Bethel Woods has a problem most venues would take: the summer amphitheater business is so visible that the rest of the year is invisible. The Sullivan County site that hosted the 1969 festival runs two of the largest seasonal events in the western Catskills between October and New Year, and both work better on a weeknight than the weekend crowds suggest.
October: Peace, Love & Pumpkins
The Halloween festival, in its sixth year, puts thousands of hand-carved jack-o'-lanterns and lit pumpkin sculpture along the garden trails on the historic grounds. The walk takes about an hour at a normal pace. Earlier in October, Sunday Harvest Festival afternoons add wagon rides, a corn maze, pumpkin carving and live music before the lights go on, which makes a Sunday the fullest version of the day.
The site is in Bethel, about 90 minutes from Kingston and a little over two hours from the George Washington Bridge. The western Catskills lodging around it, Callicoon, Narrowsburg, Livingston Manor, is a different and quieter region from the Route 28 corridor, and worth the extra half hour.
Late November through New Year: Peace, Love & Lights
The winter installation runs from around Black Friday through New Year's Eve: miles of drive-through light display across the grounds, a Holiday Hub with live music, markets and family programming, and a drone show on select nights. Gates run 5 PM to 10 PM, last entry at 9. The walk-through option on Mondays is the one most people do not know about and the one worth planning for, because moving through the installation on foot is a different experience from queueing through it in a car.
The 2026 dates are confirmed in the fall. Check the venue before booking anything around it.
How to not spend an hour in a queue
Weekend evenings in the two weeks before Christmas are the peak and the line backs up along Hurd Road well before the gates. The workable alternatives, in order: a Monday walk-through, any weeknight in early December, or the first week of January when the installation is still up and the crowd has evaporated. The Sullivan County lodging rate drops the same week.
The rest of the county in the off-season
The western Catskills run on a different rhythm from the ski towns. The Delaware corridor is quiet from November through March, which is the appeal. The Callicoon Theater, the oldest continuously operated cinema in Sullivan County since 1948, keeps its schedule through the winter. The fly-fishing towns, Roscoe and Hancock, go dormant until spring, and their restaurants run reduced winter hours.
Notes for adults 21+
Bethel Woods is a ticketed private venue and the light show is a driving event. That combination answers the question before it is asked: the consumption end of the evening does not belong in the car, at the venue, or anywhere between them. Plan it for after, at the place you are sleeping.
New York state law prohibits cannabis consumption on state-owned land and in public spaces. Sullivan County's licensed retail has grown, with several shops in the Monticello and Liberty corridor on the way in. Verify licensed status via the OCM QR code at cannabis.ny.gov, and check holiday hours, which shorten through the last week of December.
