## Margaretville, On the Line
Margaretville sits where Rt 28 meets Rt 30 at the top of the Pepacton Reservoir, which puts the village at the geographic pivot of the western Catskills. North from here takes you up past the Pakatakan ridge into Roxbury and the Delaware River headwaters. West is Andes and the long line of Delaware County hills. East is Phoenicia and the central Catskills; ten minutes south is the Belleayre ski area. Margaretville is the village most western-Catskills weekends route through, the way Phoenicia anchors the center.
The town has been quietly on a creative-class second wind. Longyear Gallery has run a cooperative program on Main Street since 2005. The Open Eye Theater stages year-round work a short walk away. Lively Harvest opened as the village's first licensed dispensary in March 2025. Newer cafes and restaurants have joined over the past five seasons. None of it is loud; all of it is real.
## Where to Buy
Margaretville has a licensed dispensary in the village:
- **[Lively Harvest](/dispensary/lively-harvest-000014)** — on Main Street. The first licensed cannabis shop in Delaware County's Catskills side, opened March 2025. The practical dispensary stop for any weekend in the western Catskills.
If you are coming in from the east on Rt 28, this is the last licensed shop before Andes and Roxbury. If you are coming from the south via Liberty, Lively Harvest is the only real option once you are past the Liberty dispensaries.
## The Pepacton and the Western Catskills
The Pepacton Reservoir runs 15 miles east from Margaretville and holds the East Branch of the Delaware, which makes it the water that eventually becomes New York City's tap. Recreational use is regulated: DEP access permits are required to fish or paddle, and cannabis consumption on or around the reservoir falls under DEP land rules plus the broader state-land prohibition. **New York state law prohibits cannabis consumption on state-owned land and in public spaces.** The Pepacton is no exception.
The fishing is real (brown trout and the occasional landlocked salmon), and the scenery along Rt 30 on the north side of the reservoir is among the most underrated in the region. Fall foliage on the water is a genuine reason to route through.
## Longyear Gallery and the Western Creative Cluster
Longyear Gallery has been a cooperative of regional artists since 2005, and the Main Street storefront is the western-Catskills counterpart to what Woodstock does in the east. Shows rotate; the cooperative model means the programming leans toward the member artists rather than imported big-name exhibitions, which gives the gallery a specific, grounded feel. Worth an hour on any Margaretville weekend.
The broader western cluster: **Hawk + Hive** in Andes, 20 minutes south, runs a contemporary program and pulls a weekend crowd. **The Roxbury Arts Group** up north runs an annual community-arts calendar with visual-art shows, film programs, and concerts. The three together make the Andes–Margaretville–Roxbury triangle the quieter alternative to Woodstock for a gallery-heavy weekend.
## The Open Eye Theater
The Open Eye Theater has been staging new and classic work on Main Street for several decades, and its programming rotates between adult productions and a family-theater side. The theater itself is small, a walk-in-and-take-a-seat kind of room, and the programming calendar is worth checking before you book a weekend. Small-room theater is a quiet pleasure in a town small enough that the bar across the street knows when intermission is.
## The Weekend Template
### Friday — Arrival and the Pakatakan Market
Arrive Friday afternoon. Check in; most Margaretville-area rentals are on the surrounding hills or out toward Halcottsville, Arkville, and the Roxbury side. Dispensary stop at Lively Harvest. Friday dinner on Main Street: The Cheese Barrel or the Binnekill Tavern are the established anchors; a few newer rooms have joined over the past few years.
The Pakatakan Farmers Market at the Round Barn in Halcottsville (five minutes up Rt 30) runs Saturday mornings May through October, but it's worth checking Friday setup if you're up for produce shopping on arrival day. An edible at the cabin in the evening, following the rental's listed rules.
### Saturday — Market, Gallery, Belleayre or the Reservoir
Saturday morning at the Pakatakan Market. This is one of the best-curated farmers markets in the Catskills, Delaware County producers showing up from as far as 40 miles out. Coffee and pastries at the Round Barn, a bag of produce for the cabin, a quick pass through the maker stalls.
Late morning: Longyear Gallery and a walk of Main Street. Margaretville's village is small but worth slow browsing; a handful of antique shops, a bookstore, the hardware store that still feels like it did thirty years ago.
Afternoon is the optional split: if the weather is summer-good, a drive along the Pepacton's north shore on Rt 30 toward Downsville, one of the great short drives in the region. If it's winter, up to Belleayre (ten minutes on Rt 28) for skiing or snowshoeing at the trailheads off the Belleayre Ridge.
Saturday evening back in the village. The Open Eye if there's programming, or dinner at Binnekill Tavern. An edible at the cabin afterward.
### Sunday — Slow Start, Home
Breakfast at Oakley's or the cafe of the week. A short walk, maybe along the reservoir or up to Catskill Scenic Trail (the rails-to-trails path that runs from Grand Gorge down through Roxbury and past Margaretville toward Bloomville). Head home before Sunday evening traffic on Rt 28.
## The Western-Catskills Solo-Cabin Weekend
Margaretville is the anchor for a specific kind of Catskills trip: solo cabin, working weekend, reset weekend. The hills around the village are full of STRs designed for this mode, small, well-heated, woodstove, good wifi, a porch that works for the reading half of the weekend and the edible half. Most accept tinctures and edibles; indoor smoke generally not; outdoor vape is case-by-case.
Two specific frames this town does well:
- **The working weekend.** Drive up Thursday night, work from the cabin Friday and Monday, take Saturday and Sunday off. Lively Harvest restocks the evening margins; Longyear and the Pepacton fill the weekend; Binnekill Tavern or the Cheese Barrel handles dinner. Back to NYC Tuesday morning.
- **The solo-reset weekend.** Two nights, no agenda. Walk the Scenic Trail. Sit on the porch. Read something long. An edible in the evening. Drive home Sunday. Margaretville does this mode as well as any Catskills town.

## Belleayre, If You're Skiing
Belleayre Mountain is 10 minutes east on Rt 28, at Highmount. It's state-owned, which makes the on-mountain rules identical to those at any New York-state-managed ski area: no cannabis consumption anywhere on resort property, and the adjacent DEC land carries the state-land prohibition as well. The Belleayre base is less crowded than Hunter's and has grown a loyal western-Catskills following over the past decade.
For a ski-weekend framing, the approach is the same as at Hunter: consumption happens off the mountain, at the cabin, in the evening. See the [Hunter Mountain cannabis ski weekend guide](/blog/hunter-mountain-cannabis-ski-weekend) for the longer version.
