Is there a dispensary near Hunter Mountain? Not in Hunter itself. The Town of Hunter, the Village of Hunter and the Town of Windham all opted out of retail cannabis in 2021, so neither ski town has a storefront. The nearest licensed shop is a few miles east on Route 23A in Tannersville, a village that kept its own counsel and did not opt out. Below the escarpment, Catskill has another. For adults 21+ planning a ski weekend, the map is short, and one detail on it needs checking before the drive.
Why the Mountaintop is mostly dry
New York gave every municipality until the end of 2021 to opt out of dispensaries, consumption sites or both. The Mountaintop opted out almost wall to wall. According to the Office of Cannabis Management's official list, the Town of Hunter, the Village of Hunter, Windham, Jewett, Ashland, Prattsville and Halcott all opted out of both. Lexington opted out of consumption sites only.
The Village of Tannersville sits inside the Town of Hunter but makes its own call as an incorporated village, and it is not on the opt-out list. That is why the one Mountaintop storefront is on Tannersville's Main Street.
Tannersville: Wintergreen
Wintergreen is at 6320 Main Street in Tannersville, in the painted-storefront stretch of the village. It held a grand opening on May 23, 2026, and its own site lists daily hours with walk-in shopping and drive-through pickup.
The detail to check: the state license register, which tracks whether each licensee is operating, listed Wintergreen's license as active but the store as not operating in early fall 2026. Shop sites and state records sometimes fall out of step, and the reason here is not public. Call or check the shop's site the day of the visit before building a ski day around it, and verify licensed status via the OCM QR code at cannabis.ny.gov when you arrive.
Below the escarpment: Catskill
Route 23A drops about 2,000 feet through Kaaterskill Clove in two miles on its way from Hunter and Tannersville down to Palenville and the village of Catskill. At the bottom, Canna Planet Catskill at 170 West Bridge Street is the closest licensed shop the state lists as operating, a few blocks from the Rip Van Winkle Bridge. Its own site puts Palenville about 10 miles away. The store has gone by other names in older listings; the address is the constant.
The Clove is a steep, curving two-lane road with a narrow shoulder and the Kaaterskill Falls trailhead traffic in season. Shop on the way up rather than making a separate evening run down and back.
Farther north, the licensed shop on Route 9W in West Coxsackie is the other Greene County option, closer for anyone coming from Albany.
For Belleayre and Windham skiers
Windham skiers have the same choice as Hunter skiers, Tannersville or Catskill, with Route 23 east toward Cairo leading to the Catskill side. Belleayre skiers on Route 28 have a different map: Margaretville, west of the mountain, has a licensed microbusiness on Bridge Street, and Woodstock has a licensed shop on Tinker Street for anyone coming in from the east. Both post seasonal hours; check before driving.
Delivery to a Mountaintop rental
Opting out of storefronts did not opt Hunter and Windham out of delivery. New York lets licensed dispensaries deliver to adults 21+ at any residential address in the state, short-term rentals included. Whether a given chalet is inside a shop's zone is a different question, and the only reliable answer comes from entering the address at checkout. Orders are prepaid, drivers do not take cash, and someone 21+ has to show ID and sign at the door.
Before the visit
- ID. A valid government photo ID showing 21+: a driver's license from any state, a passport from any country, or US military ID.
- Limits. Up to three ounces of flower and 24 grams of concentrate in possession.
- Edibles. Capped at 10 mg of THC per serving and 100 mg per package. Start low, go slow.
- Tax. A 13 percent retail cannabis tax, 9 percent state and 4 percent local.
On the mountain
Belleayre is a state-run ski area, operated by the Olympic Regional Development Authority, and New York state law prohibits cannabis consumption on state-owned land and in public spaces. Hunter and Windham are private resorts, and their lifts, lodges and base areas are businesses, where state guidance rules consumption out as well. The same goes for the Forest Preserve trailheads and the parking lots. Cannabis cannot be consumed in a motor vehicle, even parked, and driving impaired is illegal, which on 23A in January is not an abstract point. Purchases stay sealed in the car. Rental rules are set by the host.
The winter's programming on the Mountaintop is on the events calendar, and the current list of licensed shops is on the dispensary map.
